We know that domestic violence victims are amongst the highest reported "repeat victims". We also know that domestic violence statistics do not accurately assess the true picture. We also know that domestic violence is a hidden crime and that many people within the community know what is going on, but don't know how to access services. Although questioning at routine level occurs, it takes a number of times before the victim discloses domestic abuse. We also know and studies confirm that some murder victims, have had no contact with any agency, prior to their death. So how does your strategy and "safe" over come these obstacles? 1. Every victim who reports or discloses domestic abuse should get a copy of “safe” or at the very least be aware of the book. I can support your agencies website as the first two chapters are free on Google Books, please follow this link. Furthermore you might like to add our website to your contact / victim letters. (www.talkandsupport.co.uk) The police are the lead agency, domestic abuse is generally reported to the police (in higher proportions), the domestic violence police officer then acts as point of contact for all statutory agencies. This role is crucial and I believe that this officer should be assessing the suitability of the victim to receive "safe". 3. The huge strength of our staff on the front line is their ability to help others. By giving your staff a copy of the book, they will inform victims about the book and its uses, saving you a great deal of time and finance. 2. The IDVA. If the police haven't provided a copy of the book, the IDVA would be advised to. 3. Your partnership needs volunteers to organise a day of action. We need to get into the heart of communities and speak to them face to face. For example, copies of the book need to be talked about and distributed to: hairdressing salons, children's clinics, mother and toddler groups, women’s institute groups, slimmer’s groups, school pta, church groups, hospital waiting rooms, doctors surgery's, all agency partners, freedom groups, placed in housing association tenant packs etc. So many people can help you achieve this: for example, neighbourhood wardens, pcso's, street pastors, support staff, volunteering agencies, wrvs etc This could be co-ordinated with the white ribbon appeal each November. 4. Please do not actively advertise "safe" within the local press, the front cover should not be disclosed.
